*January 31 – A Chinese court sentences poet and political dissident Zhu Yufu to a seven-year prison term for "inciting subversion of state power". During Yufu's trial hearing, prosecutors cited a poem and messages he had sent on the internet. *February 13 – In a ceremony at the White House, John Ashbery was awarded the National Humanities Medal and Rita Dove was awarded the National Medal of Arts. The honors were bestowed to 15 artists in all by President Barack Obama. *April 4 – Günter Grass's poem "What Must Be Said" was first published.
